ranked #7 by ben: "Sure, Jeph Loeb is no Frank Miller, but I will say that this book gives lots of respect to 'Batman: Year One' while still expanding on the characters from that time in Batman's history. It may be a little bit more 'comic-booky' than Year One, but at this point the super-villains are starting to take Gotham away from the mobsters and Loeb illustrates this transition with great skill. This is also one of the flat-out best tales of Batman as a detective (he is the world's greatest detective, remember?) - the entire story is told like a classic mystery story. Last but not least, this book explores the fascinating character of Harvey Dent before he became Two-Face. An excellent read."
